Whether it’s their first day of kindergarten, or they’re returning to friends and teachers they’ve known for years, we’ve got some back-to-school tips to have them (and you) ready for day one!
Go Shopping For Supplies!
It’s obvious, but it’s also the most essential!
Before you head out to the store, email your child’s new teacher and ask them directly what school supplies you should pick up. There might be items they won’t actually need, or the teacher might actually have some supplies for the class.
For a general list, it usually looks something like this:
A couple of folders for different subjects
An Agenda
Some blank and lined paper
Pencils and an eraser (or two)
A ruler
A pencil sharpener
Crayons or coloured pencils
Highlighters
A couple of glue sticks
Safety scissors
Backpack
Pencil box
Again, this list might look a little different depending on the grade, but it’s a good starting point!
Get Them A Fresh Haircut!
This one is especially important for the more shy kids out there!
Getting a haircut means shining a sort of spotlight on yourself and some kids won’t like that. So, getting a fresh cut a few days before school means they start the year with confidence and they won’t need to get another for at least a while. By then they should be a lot more comfortable around their classmates!
Get Shoes and Break Them In!
From colour to style, getting to pick out that new pair of kicks is a highlight of their back-to-school experience! However, they should wear them for a bit before their first day to break them in.
There is also another little trick you can use: fill up two ziplock bags with water, stick them all the way down to the toes, and put them in the freezer. When the water freezes and expands it will help stretch out the shoes to be more comfortable!
Prepare Them For The Schedule!
If summer vacation ends, and they’re used to staying up late and sleeping in, it will be really tough for them to just switch to a school sleeping schedule.
Have them start going to bed a little earlier each night a few weeks out from the start of school. You could even plan some activities to help them wind down before bed, like reading their favourite books.
Don’t Just Do It Yourself!
When it comes to getting ready to head back to school, make sure you’re involving them in the process!
Going to school can be a test of their independence, so allow them to make some decisions for themselves. From shoes to some school supplies, they’ll feel more confident in their abilities if you help to empower their choices!

Prepare Immune Boosting Lunches!
We have all been there: our kids getting the flu or other illnesses the second school starts. A great way to ensure that your whole family isn’t out of commission for a week is by packing lunches that support your kids’ immune systems!
We recommend loading your kids’ lunches up with immune boosting foods that are high in vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc. Some examples of these types of foods are berries, brightly coloured vegetables, leafy greens, eggs, and citrus fruits.
Another great alternative would be to purchase a probiotic that also contains those vitamins and minerals and add that to their daily routine.
